Charlie Dominici was born on June 16, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York. He released his first album, Billy and Charles, in 1969. He continued making music for the next decade and was a founding member of the band Franke and the Knockouts by the end of the 1970's. Their self-titled album was released in 1980 with moderate success.

Charlie first heard of Majesty when he read an ad in a local music paper. After hearing they were looking for a new lead vocalist he contacted their manager at the time, a guy named Andy Ross, who handed him their demo tape in 1987. He auditioned and landed the job that November. Majesty was renamed Dream Theater shortly thereafter. Charlie was responsible for penning lyrics and music to a number of songs that made up their debut album, When Dream and Day Unite, such as "Afterlife" and "Status Seeker". When Dream and Day Unite was released in 1989.

Charlie left Dream Theater in 1989, but remained on friendly terms with the band. He did not enter the music scene actively again until 2004, when Dream Theater asked him to reunite with them to celebrate the 15th anniversary of When Dream and Day Unite. This concert was a major success, later becoming one of the most successful releases on Dream Theater's Ytsejam Records. It is believed by most people that this experience gave him the spark to make music again. "The truth is," says Charlie, "I was already getting the passion back before Mike asked me to do that show with them. I had already started writing the Trilogy and was thinking about finding a band to work with. I do admit, however, that the show did serve as a confirmation in my mind that I definitely needed to continue with my music."

Dominici's first solo release was O3: A Trilogy Pt. I in 2005. This conceptual album, accompanied only by guitar and harmonica, was a critical success which prompted him to return to making music full time for the first time in over a decade. He started his own progressive metal band, Dominici, and was signed to InsideOut records soon after. The sequel, O3: A Trilogy Pt. II, was released in 2007 followed by a successful European tour both opening for Dream Theater and headlining shows. Their latest album, O3: A Trilogy Pt. III, was released in April 2008.
